...and the last one. It's probably starting to seem like a conspiracy with all the site closures lately but I assure you that I decided months ago to retire (for now at least) after I hit three digits. First off, I want to thank members of the following bands for their positive feedback: Stark Raving Mad, Black Market Baby, Reflex From Pain, Sideshow, Killroy, TMA, friends and family of The Fiends, Manifest Destiny, US Chaos, DDT, Ugly Americans, Menstrual Cycles, E-13, Bomb Squad, Algebra Mothers, Landlords, and anyone I may have left out. Total number of complaints about copyright infringement (even though I always felt like it wasn't really my place to make other people's music available for mass consumption) over the course of 100 posts= zero. Now that's punk. Thanks to everyone who has emailed and thanks for listening. There are plenty of blogs out there better than this one so go check them out (AND let them know you stopped by). On to the last post....

If you were to sit around banging on a guitar and bass (that don't really sound in tune) and recorded the output on a jambox you might end up with this record. Actually your record would probably be crap- while this one, strangely, seems rather brilliant. Drums? Fuck it, who need drums. And after it was all over the Teenage PhDs had the audacity to commit it to vinyl (instead of just some crappy cassette). If anyone knows the story behind this 7" I'd like to hear it. According to the Teenage PhDs "Punk Rock Is Dead" and I suppose that's true for "Dressed For The H Bomb" as well. Enjoy this 7" from 1980. Adios.

Hey, didn't I just talk about the Landlords 3 months ago? Yes I did. I told you how good they were, and I was right. Since that time, however, I managed to get a copy of their 7" of cover songs and since I only put up a few songs last time I figured we'd all take another listen. Here's the thing, I don't like cover songs. I think that they are almost always totally unnecessary, so there must be something special about a group that can put 4 covers on one 7" and all of the tracks are actually good. My main reason for this post, however, is to see if Mr. Beers (a member of the Landlords) who commented on the last write-up can tell me why the back of the record says that there was to be a 2nd Landlords LP called "Fitzgerald's Paris". Where is it? Did it ever happen? From 1987-

You may or may not know the story on this one already. Great Connecticut hardcore from 1982 recorded at Radiobeat (as a demo tape) that received a vinyl release in the early 90s because some German fella from Crucial Response figured it deserved one. He was correct. You have to wonder if this was a 7" pressed in 1982 with a run of 500 copies during the Radiobeat/Deep Wound era how much you would have to pay for it today. Instead, it turns out you don't have to pay much. After going to the trouble of readying this for uploading (and believe me, these songs were hard to separate) I realized you can buy a copy here. I thought this was out of print so maybe they are old copies or it's back in production. Either way, that's why you only get 4 of the 13 tracks, now go get your own-

Pianos and mustaches?? After the outcry over facial hair in music I knew I had to put you through it all over again. This is the lone 7" from this Akron, Ohio band featuring former Rubber City Rebel Ron Mullins released in 1978 on the Clone label. The best thing about this record isn't the catchy A side (and the equally entertaining B side) but the fact that you can get (original) mint unplayed copies of the Clone releases right here- so what are you waiting for? Before you tell me this sounds too rock for your ears compared to the usual fare offered up at this site, save it. You're talking to a guy that likes Foghat.....dude.

Back when I first started listening to punk music I would usually tape the local radio show, decide what I liked, and then try to pick it up at the record store. If they didn't haven't it (or I couldn't tape it off of a friend) I was out of luck, because if I'm remembering correctly Pushead's Putrid Evil flexi disc was the only record I ever mailordered. Without great compilations like the Smash The State series, the odds of me hearing a 7" like this (included on volume one) would be very slim. What you get is $500 worth of early Canadian punk for not much cash, and the comps are obviously a lot easier to track down than the originals. Sure this single from 1980 sounds a lot like the Clash (compare the opening of "Punk Rock Virgins" to "Clash City Rockers") but I certainly wouldn't call that a bad thing-

Sure Sick Pleasure have only a split 12" and a 7" to their name, but that's not too bad for a group that didn't really release anything while they were actually together. After disbanding, 3/4 went on to Code Of Honor while Niki Siki (I've seen his name spelled so many ways) went on to Verbal Abuse. I remember seeing VA open for Samhain although at that point they were "Verbal Abuse" rather than THE Verbal Abuse. Maybe that's why there were 32 people there and the club wouldn't even turn the heat on. I debated posting this record given the recent reissue of the Code Of Honor material and the fact that I've heard rumors that the same might happen with the Sick Pleasure tunes so I'm only offering up a few tracks from 1982's 12", but one of them you can listen to over and over and not get sick of. "Three Seconds Of Pleasure" defines snotty nihilism, and no one does a punk rock pick slide better than Mike Fox.

San Francisco. 1982. Fowl Records, home of the great (& completely juvenile) FU82 7" and the mighty Verbal Abuse LP. Hard to come up with much more than that when the band info consists of first names (Dagar, Kevin, Victoria, and James). That's the punk thing to do I guess, no last names. Seems a lot of records are that way. However, this guy recorded the 7" so I'll send you to his site so you can marvel at all the great bands he got to work with, including engineering and co-producing one of my all time favorites- Condemned To Death's Diary Of A Love Monster. Here's Urban Assault's self-titled 7" from 1982. I think my favorite track is "Join The Army" since you just can't go wrong with a nice "go to hell" yelled at the end of a punk song-

The other day my ladyfriend/main squeeze/new wife needed some jeans so we ended up at the Old Navy, mainly because they seem to be cheaper than most of the other new item retailers. I mean if some child is going to get paid ten cents an hour in Sri Lanka, the least the store can do is pass some of that savings along to me- right? So I'm walking around the (incredibly bright) store and The Clash comes on their in store preprogrammed music system thing followed by Generation X's 100 Punks Rule. My initial (kneejerk lameass why do corporations have to co-opt all the cool stuff) reaction of disgust quickly dissipated once I realized that 1) Neither of these bands were exactly the epitome of what I would call underground in their day, and 2) I could be forced to listen to Hootie and the Blowfish or Dave Matthews instead (although I admit to having a bit of a soft spot for "Crash" and "The Space Between", sue me). However, if Bum Kon comes on in a Gap store I'm leaving. I've got to draw the line somewhere.

This post is definitely lacking information. There's no address anywhere on the record so I can't tell you where they are from, and the band members use pseudonyms like "Roto Tiller" and "Mr. Lizard" so I have no idea if they played in any other bands. What I can tell you is that the purpose of this post is to fill a request via the (defunct?) Punk Records mp3 blog from the guitar player of SOF himself, so I'm hoping he can give us some background information. There's a diversity of sound on this 12" from the (slight) Personality Crisis vibe of the opening track to the nice surf/East Bay Ray feel of American Dream (my favorite track). I think if you listen through a few times you may enjoy it, however some of you might think its not punk enough (like I care). One of the best things about this record is the claim that it was "solely financed with funds derived from illegal sources". I'd like to know if there's any truth behind that statement Bill! My guess is that this is the only release by this group and I don't know anything about them, which makes this a nice and easy post. I'm searching for a label.... how about artpunk? That sounds about right. That means at the time of its release, being that they were from Massachusetts, I'm sure everyone probably hated them. One notable tidbit- this was recorded at Radiobeat, home of the famous Deep Wound 7", which it sounds absolutely nothing like. Released on Mental Assault Records, probably their own label with no other recordings that I'm aware of, here's Empty Rituals' 7" from 1983-

Making good on my promise to follow up the last post with some good Texas tunes, here's Terminal Mind's 1979 7". I think it basically comes down to this record and some comp tracks as far as the extent of their output which is a shame because this release has hooks to spare. At least they avoided the sophomore slump. Don't know that much about them outside of the fact that they played a few reunion gigs in Austin (somewhat) recently. I don't know how many of these were pressed but I was surprised to find them going for @$20 on Ebay, which seems like a fairly decent deal for a great early Texas 7".

Collector Scum calls this, the fourth single from the Skunks, "crap" and Flex Discography labels it "weak" and "mediocre". Since I kind of agree you may wonder why I'm posting it. Pretty simple- 1) This is the only record of theirs I have 2) I missed the boat on the Rave Up reissue that is (for now?) sold out 3) I don't care if someone tells me something sucks, I want to hear it anyway and maybe you do as well (speaking of which, where's that 2nd Next 7"??????). I like the B side. The A side, however, sounds like it would be on the soundtrack to some terrible 80s teen movie maybe along the lines of Pretty In Pink. Maybe not, but it would definitely have Molly Ringwald in it. Or that little weasel Andrew McCarthy.

OK, screw it. I'm tired of trying to track down a copy of Nomeansno's first 7", so I think that leaves this single as the only other recording that never ended up on a CD somewhere. I could be wrong. Nomeansno rock whether they're playing the more complex rhythms they're known for, or working some straight ahead scorchers like the two classic canadian punk (cover) songs contained on this 1991 Allied release. In 1987 I went to see DOA and was informed at the door that the show was now $7 (not $6 as the flyer had advertised) because another band had been added. I thought to myself, "Who the hell is Nomeansno?" but paid the cover since I had just driven 40 minutes to see the show. Holy crap. Rarely does a band I've never heard of absolutely floor me but this was one of those occasions (this was the lineup that still had Andy on guitar). Do yourself the favor if they play your town by not missing them. From vinyl, to a cassette that has been sitting in a box for 14 years, to mp3, to your ears......

Featuring Mr. Horribly Charred Infant and Mr. Anus (although apparently that's Dr. Anus now) from the more prolific Happy Flowers, The Landlords released only one LP during their existence as well as a 7" of covers. Their album, Hey! Its A Teenage House Party, may be one of the best punk records that no one seems to remember. Not too many artists can release a record that is consistently great over the course of 21 songs, but this Charlottesville, Virginia band pulls it off. The music is fast and rough while still remaining catchy, and the lyrics are wildly un-PC which just nudges this release up an extra notch in my book. Further information can be found here, which is where I snagged the flyer scan from. Sorry for the lack of a cover but I no longer own this record- maybe someone can hook me up with a picture for ya. From memory I can tell you that I believe it was a tan cover with some sort of childish looking picture scribbled in crayon on it. Of what I can't recall. Here's a taste of 1984's Hey! If you were to set up a four track in someone's basement, give the drummer some cardboard boxes to beat on, and make the "singer" scream from inside a closet or bathroom you may end up with this 5 song 7" from Florida's We The Living. Information on this seems to be scarce and it doesn't help when the members' names are Kraut, Adam, and Megalosaurus. Since I've reached a dead end on this one I'll leave it up to the listeners. This 12" was released in 1985 on Savage Beat (HVY DRT's label??) and I'm not sure where this copy comes from, but I'm going to go ahead and assume that its probably from the Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes Volume 2 "Fanclub" CD???? I've never owned this one on vinyl, so its pretty new to me but perhaps not to some of you folks reading along. Its fast and tight with a slight bit of metal in the solos, a real ripper, and it holds up just fine 20+ years later-

Other than the fact that this band was from Belleville, Illinois I don't know much about them. The only thing I could dig up was a comment by the guitar player offering a little background on the Garage Punk Forum (click the link and scroll down). I think both sides of this 7" were comped at some point but I don't remember where, I have to assume one of the many KBD LPs. No one seems to have a sleeve for this judging by the many want lists containing "Max Load w/ PS" on them, and I don't either. In fact mine is worse off being that it is a bit dish warped. Any ideas out there on how to fix this? An email from a fella named Damian brings you the nice big scan so you can thank him for it. That's all I got, from 1979 (Max Load's only single???)-

Not to be confused with 5051, this band, from what I understand, were from Reno, NV and released two 7"s during 1986-87. The first one has good songs but sounds like crap and is probably the shortest 7" ever with the b side clocking in at 48 seconds. The second single, however, is blazing yet catchy with great (Earth AD era) Misfits style horrorpunk choruses. I think it absolutely rocks. I first heard this band on a cassette dub, followed by a CDR, and now on this Reagan Era HC bootleg from 2000 (which includes both 7"s, a whopping six minutes of music) which is where the photo comes from because I've never seen the original releases and know nothing about them. Well it turns out that as of yesterday I've been at this for a year and this will be my 80th post (which makes me not nearly as prolific as these other sites). I've decided to go back to square one for the anniversary and do another Stark Raving Mad post. I could tell you that their first 12" is one of the 10 greatest HC slabs ever made (in my humble opinion of course), but you'd know that if you just listened to it. In the comments section Bob the bass player provides a good history for you which is hard to come by for this group. Unfortunatly none of the other releases quite lived up to the chaos of MX, but since I finally got a copy of the 10" that's what you're going to get. Side 1 (listed here) is a studio demo from '85 while the rest of the record (which I haven't ripped yet) is a live show from CBGB's. Enjoy the demo-

Where's the damn music????

There has been a lack of posts lately because last week my lady friend (friends for 18 years, dating for 8) were married at "I got Married by Captured by Robots". If you haven't heard, the band Captured By Robots is doing a tour where JBOT actually marries any couple who wants to do it. Both of our parents came from out of town for it and it was a blast (my rather conservative parents were great sports about it)- I highly recommend it if he comes to your town. It was a crazy, sweaty sold out show.
After that we went up to Minneapolis, a town I'd never been to and one that totally rocks. Veggie food aplenty and a very active feel. On the way back we hit the Mall Of America and the IKEA where the picture of the toilet was taken. It made me wonder if something bad had happened that made it necessary for them to add the "display only" guard.
I think that's a pretty good excuse for my slacking off but I'll get back to it soon. Right now I gotta check out the other sites I'm behind on......

Not your ordinary paddle thrash 7", Connecticut's Chronic Disorder keep it nice and interesting on this 1984 release, one of my favorites of the period. This 45 along with FOD's Love Songs (released the same year) still reminds me that hardcore can go beyond the generic and still sound good today. For some reason I've never been the type of person to track down other material by a group even when I really like a record so I've never heard a single other song by this band. If anyone has the 1st 7" (300 pressed?) perhaps you would like to share a listen- $45 is bit much to pay for a record in my opinion. I've heard it leans more in the punk direction. Here's a great little EP by California's The Sins. The website I "borrowed" the scan from says they were from San Bernadino and also released an LP on Squirtdown, home of Jackshit's Hicktown 7", called "Beginning From The End" but I've never heard nor seen it. Perhaps a more knowledgeable individual can fill me in on the full length. Two members would later play with The Bellrays, while another awesome website informs me that two other players were previously in Sadist Faction with a future member of White Flag (is "S Is For Space" ever going to be reissued??? A recent $1 find, I hadn't the faintest idea what this record was and assumed it was going to get thrown in the pile of cheap crap I wished I hadn't bought for any amount of money. It turns out I actually like it. Hyped To Death had this to say about it- "I fell in love with the A-Moms' "Strawberry Cheesecake" the moment I heard it twenty years back... Cheesy Stranglers keyboards, annoying post-Devo vocals, and three or four of the most insidious hooks ever committed to vinyl". Hyped To Death comped it for their Homework series and, after browsing the H2D website, I realize that a $1 purchase is going to push me in the direction of having to spend $100 on more stuff I didn't even know I needed. I think with the next few posts I'll stray into some not so punk/hc territory. (R)eally (U)seless (S)atanic (T)rash went into the studios of the University of Missouri around 1989 to help a friend complete a project for a recording class. The premise was to make even the worst band sound halfway decent and he definitely had his hands full with this Spinal Tap influenced abomination. I'm sure there wasn't a sober individual present by the time the first chord rang out and this demo which was never released (why would it be?) was the result. Supposedly from Slovakia, the band actually contained a few members of Season To Risk with no one playing the correct instruments. The sound isn't fantastic since it comes from an ancient cassette (I'm sure there isn't a master) but I'm throwing it out there anyway because a line like "kiss my balls you retarded pig" might be enjoyed by someone out there. Someone? Anyone?.....

I picked up Angry Red Planet's 2nd 7" for a couple of bucks the other day and thought about posting it but then I noticed that Something I Learned Today had posted it at one time and The Punk Vault had a short write up about it as well. Since I had already made my mind up to do something on this Michigan band I'm sticking to my guns and going with the previous 7". Too Much Knowledge Can Be Dangerous was released in 1983 and is every bit as good as 1985's Gawker's Paradise. I think both 7"s sound pretty cruddy but the tracks hold up even with the muddy production. Mummy From Hollywood is now stuck in my head as a result of writing this post-

There's a brief article about the history of New Orleans rock and punk which mentions Disappointed Parents but other than that I don't know that much about them.

I don't have much to say about Teenage Head since they are anything but obscure- they are still active, have a website, and unless I'm mistaken they may even have some gold records in their native Canada. A few of their LPs have been reissued on CD by Unidisc (so buy some- import prices, ouch!), but after an extensive search to determine its status it appears to me that their first LP, Teenage Head, is still out of print. What's that go to do with this 7"? Picture My Face and Tearin' Me Apart both appeared on the first full length (at least on one of its incarnations, its been reissued twice at least) but I have no way of knowing if the versions posted here are the same as the LP. Either way, my determination is that these songs are not currently available and come from their 2nd (?) 7" (I think Top Down is their first, with both 7"s being released the same year). That's a lot of trivial blah blah to sit through. Your reward? Two great songs from 1978-

I've already talked about Tools from San Francisco, and I've seen a 7" by a band of the same name from the UK, but this one is from DC and I'm pretty sure this is their only record. I searched the names on the labels and came up empty handed as far as information goes. Next I tried the record company, RGV records, and apparently the name is being used by some DJ label nowadays so I'm guessing its not the same one that released this single. The A side is memorable from the first chorus, while the B side isn't nearly as solid but I still like it. Around 50 copies came with the cover you see pictured here, the rest got the white sleeve treatment. That's all I got, so stop reading and start listening to The Tools 7" from 1981-

Great southern California punk from 1981 on Bemisbrain. The title track is definitely a standout but there isn't a dud on here in my opinion (of course it shouldn't be that difficult with a 3 song 7"). Cover scan comes from Collector Scum and that's all I know about it- short and sweet. Enjoy.

Although she was completely worthless when it came to researching posts she always kept me company while I was writing them. Among her many bad habits was attacking my other dog for no apparent reason, so this Jerks 7" seems like a fitting tribute. Here's a Texas band with a serious UK fetish. They released two records that I'm aware of- an LP (more of an EP) called Children Of War and this 7" from 1982. I've seen this referred to as the Tomorrow The World Ends 7" since the cover says "Tomorrow The World Ends, There Is No Defense". The music is pretty primitive 2 or 3 chord punk rock but I like it and actually prefer it to the LP which has some annoying guitar overdubs. Unfortunately, I know nothing about the band or the label, Bouncing Betty, which I cross-checked on Flex and found no other releases for. Seems like people can always fill in the blanks for Texas bands so maybe they can with this one as well-

If I have this straight there's a Mutants from Detroit, one from California, and this one from Liverpool, right? And I'm sure there's probably a hundred more since it seems like a it would be a popular name. These Mutants released two singles, the more difficult to find Hard Times/School Teacher which I'd like to hear if anyone has it, and this one. 77 Punk, where the cover scan comes from, doesn't have much to say about them and this may be too rock sounding for some ears but I like it. Vocalist Sweet William has a nice Lee Ving thing going on especially on Boss Man. Oddly, the version of this 7" that seems to float around the most is the original even though I think this single was reissued and bootlegged at one point.

How to make an easy post: 1) Upload a record I already have on the computer. 2) Snag a sleeve from a fantastic resource like Collector Scum. 3) Let Sound Idea tell you what they know about the 7"..... "I have seen a few copies of the Menstral Cycles "1/2 Skin 1/2 Punk" 7", but few people can give me any more info on them. I have been told that the singer moved to Florida from England and that he tried to get the band signed to Riot City, but that never happened. The Menstral Cycles record was self released in 1983 on Cycles 1. The band address and phone number is from Hialeah, a small town near Miami. The record was produced by David Camp, who also recorded F, but none of those guys know anything about The Menstrual Cycles."
Although this record isn't that spectacular in my opinion, it may satisfy any Florida rarities obsession you might have-

Folks probably already know all about Impatient Youth from the posthumous Lost And Found releases, but if I'm not mistaken this 7" was their only official recording during their first go round (I think there was a reunion single). Also, I don't believe this 7" has ever been reissued but I could be wrong. I knew nothing about them before hearing Frontline so don't expect any more info here, just one hell of a catchy record that seems to be getting a little pricey these days. I think some of the tracks almost have a 1960s feel that I really like, especially "Don't Listen To The Radio" (my favorite) with its nice opening harmonies. From 1980 here's Definition Empty-

Despite a few goofy moments, I've always really liked this 7" by Doggy Style (although not enough to seek out their LPs I guess since I've never heard any of them). Live their brand of fun posicore didn't go over that well with the grumpy St. Louis punks who just stared at them when the band tried to get everyone to pogo to "Donut Shop Rock". Broadcast, a Kansas band, released this EP (pretty sure its their only one) in 1982 on Fresh Sounds, the home of Mortal Micronotz. I tried to find more information on them including doing searches of the band members' names and have come up with zilch. Since someone provided a lot of great stuff on the Mortal Micronotz maybe someone can do the same for this band. Personally I could do without the saxophone but I still find their nice jagged midwest art rock enjoyable. I think Zero Hero is my favorite track on here, see for yourself-

It seems like the UK had no shortage of great catchy punk singles in the late seventies/early eighties and this one by The Wall (their 2nd) is no exception. Produced by Steve Jones and released in 1979 it features a different line up than their first single- adding a member of The Pack. This Maryland act released one 7" on Vermin Scum and had a track on the previously posted Welcome To Ax/ction Island compilation. That's all I know about them. The first side of this single was recorded in 1984 and has a more straight ahead hardcore sound while side two is from '85 and has a "posthardcore (or insert your own lame music critic term)" feel to it. Unfortunately the music suffers from a fairly weak recording in my opinion but it's still a solid single. Here's 1985's Rodentia 7"-

I first heard Suburban Mutilation on my local no power having college radio station @1985. I rarely ordered records through the mail so it took a while to track down a copy at my local store and unfortunately I misplaced it about a year later. Fast forward around 20 years and I finally get to hear this gem again. I thought for sure nostalgia got the best of me and it would end up sounding disappointing to jaded ears. I guess I was wrong because I still think this LP rocks in all of its fuzzed out noisy glory. This record also contains some of the worst guitar leads/solos on a punk record I've heard but somehow they fit perfectly. S.U.M. member Rev Norb went on to other more well known bands that I know nothing about, but maybe you do. Here's some of my favorite tracks......

Here's a band I get really excited about. Not to be confused with Tools from DC (who released one catchy as hell single), San Francisco's Tools released three 7"s, two on Subterranean records and this (their first) on their own Work Records in 1979. They featured Mike Fox of Code Of Honor fame on guitar and that's good enough for me. I don't know that much about the rest of the band, maybe someone else knows what's become of them. I've never heard the 3rd 7" (in fact I've never even seen a copy of it) and although I prefer the Hard Wark 7" I thought I'd post this one so as not to bite on any more Subterranean releases. Once again I find myself responding to a sweet post over at the Something I Learned Today mp3 blog. The Insane Industries Half Skull Comp featured Decry + 3 other bands and Decry's first 7" also appeared on this label. Although the band's single was reissued on a Cleopatra retrospective (OOP??) with most of their other recordings the compilation left off Symptoms Of Hate and Fight To Survive from the 7". Most will agree that the Falling LP represents their punk rock best but I've always liked all of their stuff including the often maligned Japanese LP. When Decry toured with Peace Corpse and played my hometown they were supposed to play a "youth dance" as the promoter booked it at a VFW hall. When people started showing up in the parking lot the owner, not particularly pleased with the look of the youth, locked the door and wouldn't let anyone in. Hours later they managed to redirect the show to another venue and it when on as planned.

Kansas isn't really known for producing too many punk bands that break out beyond their local scene, but one band of note was The Mortal Micronotz who managed to release 4 LPs and one 7 inch. Their earlier incarnation featured Dean Lubensky on vocals and they cranked out some great nerdy (garage like?) punk. I've never heard the releases with Jay Hauptli fronting the band so I really can't comment but I've read that the band had a rougher sound during this period preferred by some and not by others. I'll leave the David Lee Roth/Sammy Hagar debate to fans of The Micronotz (we ALL know who wins the Van Halen one). I don't have any pressing info but 1984's Live Recording Of The Video Soundtrack 7" seems to float around the least so here it is-

Normally there's two things I don't like in my punk/hardcore. The first is too much goofiness. Sure bands like Angry Samoans can get away with it but usually it's just not my thing. Second is when a punk band does their take on some other genre, be it country, blues, rap, etc. With these things in mind there should be no reason I would enjoy the Zany Guys' Party Hits Vol. 2 but I do, and you may as well. What a great LP this is. Someone was nice enough to hook me up with a copy of this record that I'd been trying to track down again (hmmm, I wonder why- see previous post) and it's as good as I remember. Members of Second Wind were previously in bands such as Minor Threat, Youth Brigade (DC), Double O, the Untouchables and plenty more but I don't recall this record getting much traction here in the midwest. It was released in 1984 on the R & B label, one that I'm not that familiar with, and contains 9 tracks- all solid.

Long ago in the era of Quincy/Chips punk rock paranoia my parents decided that hardcore music was an awful influence and I returned home one day to find all of my records laid out and my Mom and Pop were going through them. I knew this wasn't good and tried to explain that there was a wide diversity of opinion in the music- for every Gang Green drunken rambling there was a Minor Threat, a Feederz 7" countered by Rock For Light by Bad Brains, and if it seemed like every punk band had a disagreement with US policy (and government, militarism, etc. in general) well there was always US Chaos. With a whole host of conservative leaning issues set to super catchy american Oi, how could they resist. They could. They took all of my records, gave my punk shirt collection to the thrift store, and even snapped that Jesus 7" in half. My copy of the We've Got The Weapons 12" by US Chaos is long gone but it's still (I think) available on CD from GEMM if you look around, and it includes some live tracks and this 7"-

Law And Order, a DC band, introduced their only record that I know of in 1981 on Fetal. I think if the production was better on this 7" it may have been considered a minor classic, instead it seems to have faded into history. On this release they continue the Hardcore/Punk Rock tradition of having a song named after the band, I imagine one could make a 10 CD set of bands that do this. The only other thing I know about this band is that singer Mike Finnegan is the brother of Void drummer Sean Finnegan. Just a note- there are some weird moments where a song seems to skip, another fades out abruptly, one has a strange effect and still another contains a weird guitar start, but I can assure you that's just how the record is recorded.

I really don't know that much about this band other than the fact that they were from (I believe) Atlanta, Georgia. I bought their lone LP Broken Toy in the mid eighties even though the cover art did not lead me to believe that the disc contained within would rock as much as it did, but it was in the punk section and there wasn't anything else new that week so why not. Until recently I didn't even know they had a 7" until I saw it on the (lots of surface noise) "fanclub" release America's Most Hardcore 2. Even though in my opinion the LP is infinitely better, you can still buy it for @$10 while this 7" went for $200 recently (I know I know- rarity counts). My advice is to listen to it here, and then pick up the AMH CD which also contains the LP and some other rarities.

After reading about Alive And Kicking on the SiLT website I figured I'd toss out this DC area comp from a couple of years later. Released on DSI in 1988 it contains a pretty solid lineup. Government Issue do one of my favorite tracks of theirs on this 7", although this recording feels a little lazy compared to the kick ass live version on the Finale 2xLP. Two more highlights include the always rocking Black Market Baby and a good tune by Shudder To Think from their Sammich days.

TMA were either from New York or New Jersey (I'm not really sure) and released 2 LPs, 1987's Beach Party 2000 and 1984's What's For Dinner. They also had a couple of tracks on a live compilation called Hardcore Takes Over. Unfortunately, that's all I've got for you. You can find a copy of Beach Party just about anywhere, but What's For Dinner is a little harder to come by. I picked it up despite the atrocious cover art (I mean seriously, look at it, and Beach Party is even worse) on a whim when it was released and haven't really heard anything about it ever since. Checkered Future Flexi

Normally I wouldn't do a post of the same band twice, but for Reflex From Pain's Checkered Future Flexi I am going to make an exception for 3 reasons:
1. When a band has a singer different than one you're used to hearing (on this 1983 demo it's one of my all time favorite HC screamers Ray Cappo) it seems like a different band. For me the vocal is what gives a band most of its personality, especially when it's hardcore. This is probably why I feel a band isn't a band without H.R., Jello, etc.
2. It's a flexi. No one wants to get some crappy flexi out and put it on a turntable. You have to handle it like a used Kleenex so you don't mess it up. Even if you own this record you should have it in mp3 format.
3. CTHC rips.
The liner notes to this 7" state that the RFP on this recording is essentially the first lineup of Shelter (+ Tom Capone), and that it provides the missing link for the Reflex From Pain/Violent Children/76 % Uncertain/Shelter family. In fact you may recognize some of the songs as performed by these other bands. An interesting link demonstrating the inbreeding of these bands can be viewed here. It's odd to me that this was never pressed on regular vinyl since it rocks from beginning to end-

Here's the second 7" of SF Underground bands from Subterranean Records released in 1980. This one has Spikes, The Lewd, Society Dog, and Undead. I think every band on here turns in a great track. SF Underground Part 1

Although most of the huge names in the early California punk scene came from the southern part of the state, San Francisco produced a lot of great bands as well. Subterranean records released two 7" compilations documenting the early scene and both of them are solid. Part one features No Alternative, Flipper, Tools, and VKTMS. Flipper probably need no introduction and have plenty of music in print. VKTMS put out a CD on Broken Rekids that compiles pretty much all of their recorded material while some of the No Alternative stuff is available on an LP through Bacchus Archives. Tools released a few 7"s but I don't think they have been reissued so you're out of luck there. I'll be posting part 2 later this week, for now here's 1979's SF Underground 1-

After the last post I suppose I'll continue in the vein of odd recordings. I read about the Helen Keller record in this article and figured I had to hear it. Luckily it was repressed in 2003 as a double 7" with 3 additional songs (including the Dump On The Chump reprise), but for some reason it already seems like it's difficult to track down. The above link pretty much lays out the history for you so I won't waste your time. The scan is of the reissue (which is white, not blue, sorry) but you can view the plain white sleeve style of the original in the article as well. One record I can't get enough of (and sleazegrinder agrees) is the 12" Big Stick released in 1986 that combined their first 7" with 2 new songs (well, they were at the time) on Blast First, sometimes referred to as the Drag Racing 12". I have no idea what would have prompted me to pick this up when it came out since it was unlike anything else I was listening to. It holds up well 20 years later and this 12" and the Crack Attack 12" (released on Buy Our Records of all things) are available together on one CD entitled Crack n' Drag. This odd duo is still at it and you can purchase their CDs, check out a lot more mp3s and read all about them on their website. I don't think the vinyl is still in print but I see it around used stores from time to time (maybe that's a bad sign?).

When Johnithin Christ sings "never since I had sung with my very first band had I ever been so scared" in Code Of Honor's Downtown maybe he's talking about his previous band, San Francisco's Society Dog. As far as I know this is his first recorded act and they released two 7"s and a compilation track. They also featured Joe Dirt from the Undead on guitar. I thought some ass had markered on my copy until I saw some scans of other ones that also had the band name hand colored.

Here's some good early Texas punk you probably already know about. The Huns put out this single in 1979 with the A side appearing later on the Bloodstains Across Texas comp and the B side showing up on Killed By Death #4. The only other material I know of is the Live at the Palladium LP released by Existential Vacuum and available on CD through Get Hip. The liner notes to the EV release are available here from the break my face website. It's a very interesting read so I won't bother with any other info here. Alright, back to the harder stuff. F.O.D.'s Love Songs is one of my favorite 7"s of all time, and I must not be the only one since it's been pressed three separate times. Hailing from Pennsylvania, this trio plays wild chaotic thrash (at least on this release they do) and have been at it for 20+ years. They've put out a decent chunk of material, mostly on a German label, that I've never heard despite being a fan of the 7". Keeping with the seventies sound of the previous post, here's the 2nd single from Radiators From Space. Often billed as the first punk band in Ireland, they feature future Pogue Philip Chevron. The first 2 7"s and the LP TV Tube Heart are pretty rockin'. Later they would drop the "from space" part of their name and supposedly get overproduced, but I've never heard their later material so I can't comment. Here's a pretty complete history and discography for your browsing pleasure. TV Tube Heart has been recently reissued, but I believe it's only available as an import (???).

This is a nice easy post since all I can really tell you is that this band was from Scotland and this is the only thing they ever put out that I know of. It was released in 1978 and both sides are winners. The A side is also available on a Stiff Rarities compilation and probably on some other similar reissues. The only other information I dug up was a website claiming that this band contains a future bass player for Simple Minds. Here's the 7"-

This Nebraska band played music in the posthardcore/emo-ish vein (for lack of a better term) during the early nineties. If you like this kind of stuff (I do) they were one of the best at it, and one of the most underrated. I believe they released 2 7"s, an EP, and two albums (1993's Eggplants & Sunspots and 1995's Lip Read Confusion). They have been an on again off again band ever since, and I'm unsure of what their current status is. Bass player/vocalist Bernie McGinn runs Caulfield Records which released most of the Sideshow recordings and the Daily Nebraskan recently ran an article featuring information about his label. My apologies for not crediting the photo, I can't remember where I got it from.

The Mob were NYHC from the early days. They originally released two 7"s, 1982's Upset The System and 1983's Step Forward, as well as a full length LP entitled We Come To Crush. It's all good stuff, but unfortunately it's not very easy to track down. They also have some compilation tracks but I think they were available on the previous offerings. I bought the first 2 45s out of a bargain bin for fifty cents apiece @1985, and this would be a great collector's story if I left out the part about selling them a year later for a couple of bucks. More recently available is The Truth Over The Airwaves, a CD with 20 tracks recorded live at a radio station. I haven't heard this record, in fact I just found out about it, so I can't tell you much about it- I assume it rocks. Step Forward is a more diverse early recording, but i've always liked the staccato hardcore of Upset The System-

Killroy was a band from Hollywood, California who released a 7" and a 12". The 12" was released in 1985 on Upstart records who also released Circle One's Patterns of Force. I know nothing about this record since i've never seen nor heard it. The 7" came out in 1983 on Ghettoway/Mystic and is one of the better releases from this hit and miss label and the production isn't bad compared with other Mystic recordings. Although every song is essentially about Vietnam or beer, it's still a catchy punk record that's worth a listen. Here it is-

7 Seconds

Where to start with a band that has experienced the longevity that 7 Seconds has without making this post way too lengthy? Everyone probably already knows that the first 2 7"s, The Crew, Walk Together Rock Together, and New Wind (in my opinion) are all awesome. There was that period (Soulforce Revolution, Praise, Ourselves) that represented a real misstep towards a U2ish college rock thing that I didn't really care for (although I haven't heard these records in a long time). The early 90s saw them return to their original sound and their new album will definitely please the old school fans (yes, they have a new album). All of the above is readily available as far as I know so i'll try to post something that isn't-
The 1980 7" was released with a fanzine in the early 90s and features songs from 1980, some without Kevin Seconds on vocals. It never seems to appear in band discographies so i'm not sure if they approved of its release or not-

I think I've seen a few posts about Really Red, but I guess you're just going to have to sit through another one aren't you? They were a great Texas punk band from the early eighties that released 2 LPs and three 7"s (and one unreleased (?) 7", but we'll get to that). The only record currently in print is Teaching You The Fear through Empty Records. Your next option is to track down the discography CD from the Angry Neighbor label out of Houston that collects part of the Modern Needs 7", The entire Teaching LP, part of (which drives me nuts) the Rest In Pain LP, and all of the New Strings For Old Puppets EP. I believe only 1000 copies of this CD were pressed in the early 90s, but there's a seller on Ebay who always seems to have a mint copy up for sale for @$10-15 still in the shrink wrap. The Despise Moral Majority 7" is a live single with songs that appear on Teaching You The Fear so unless you're a hardcore collector type, I wouldn't pay the $$ for this. That leaves the Crowd Control/Corporate Settings 7", their first recording on their own CIA label. The story I've heard is that they pressed around 250 copies and they just kind of sat around in someone's house until they sold them out of a band member's record store. This single was made more widely available in the mid nineties (?) on the Deep In The Throat Of Texas compilation (2000 pressed). Here's the first 7"-

Upright Citizens were a German band that released 3 records (Bombs of Peace in 1982, Make the Future Mine and Yours in 1983, and Faces and Views in 1985) before compiling some of this material on their Better Youth Organization release Open Eyes, Open Ears, Brains To Think, & a Mouth To Speak. Most of the material was rerecorded for the '85 BYO LP but I'm not sure how different they sound, since I've never heard (or seen for that matter) these previous records. They rounded out the eighties with another LP (Kiss Me Now) and a 7" (Farewell). They may have released an album in the 90's entitled Colour Your Life (I assume it's the same band). I don't have much in the way of biographical information, so hopefully someone else can share some. Maybe they're more well known in their home country. Black Market Baby were a D.C. band that had a punkier sound than their hardcore contemporaries. In their (more or less) original form they released a single, an LP entitled Senseless Offerings, and some compilation tracks. At various points since then there have been bootlegs, compilations of material, reunion 7"s, rereleases, and new releases of old material- I'll let someone else give you the rundown on the discography. Neon Christ were a band from Atlanta, Georgia that released one ten-song self-titled 7" in 1984 and a double 7" (containing 8 songs from the first single, their song "Ashes To Ashes" from the PEACE compilation and 3 unreleased tracks) in 1990. The members went on to other bands that I don't know that much about (including Gardens Of and The Go Devils) but the oddest tidbit I've found is that guitar player William Kip Duvall went on to co-write the #1 (??) hit "I Know" for Dionne Farris (of Arrested Development). Currently he works with Comes With The Fall and lives in Los Angeles. These songs from the double seven inch show how the band can switch it up from total thrash to more melodic material (and Ashes To Ashes is still a monster of a song).

Asexuals

The Asexuals were a mid to late eighties band from Montreal Canada that put out one 7" and 5 LPs and were one of the best live bands of the era (I think they must have rehearsed their uniform jumps out in the garage). Only two of the LPs featured original singer John Kastner who left to form the Doughboys, and who now plays in All Systems Go in addition to releasing solo work (check out what he's up to now here). I believe the last two Asexuals records are still available on Cargo but I was unable to verify the availability of 1984's Be What You Want and 1985's Contemporary World, the albums that feature John on vocals. Be What You Want is full of fast, catchy punk as is Contemporary World (although it's a bit more polished) and you should pick these up if you see them around your local used record store.

I don't know that much about this band aside from the fact that they put out two records, 1982's The Cutest Band In Hardcore 12" and 1983's Chronic Sick 7", both on Mutha records. These records are now absurdly collectible and seem to be on every want list out there. The only other thing I know is that they resided in New Jersey and I believe one of the members may own a bar there now (?). That's about all I can tell ya, maybe someone out there can fill in the blanks. Here's the 12"-

First off, i've added pretty pictures after realizing that my site was ugly compared to the ones I read, and now you know what the records look like. Second, I've linked to a clip of Fear's SNL performance under the Fear entry (see it while you can). On to the post. I don't know that much about this band. I believe they were from Richmond, Virginia and they put this single out on Zero Degree records who also released the White Cross 7". I also recall seeing a full length by them once in a record store but I don't know anything about it. I also have no idea if the members were in anything before or after this band although it would seem reasonable since The Prevaricators weren't active for very long as far as I can tell. This is decent enough punk, although I think I'm So Cool may be the only standout track here. Anyone else have any info???

Dr. Know is well known for featuring Bandon Cruz, former child star of The Courtship Of Eddie's Father. They released a couple of LPs, a 7", a 7" derived from one of the LPs, compilations of old stuff on two different LPs on two different labels, etc. etc. It all gets kinda confusing, so my advice is to get the Plug In Jesus 12" which you can probably pick up for not much $$$ which I think is their best record. Their great blend of metal and hardcore separated them from what I consider to be the generic sound of other "nardcore" bands. If I'm not mistaken it was during this period that they were a three piece with guitarist Kyle Toucher also doing the vocals. Dr. Know is still around, check them out, and I think the Mystic Best Of CD has some if not all of the 12".

Reflex From Pain

Connecticut and the surrounding areas produced some great EPs in the early 80s. Reflex From Pain's Black And White was one of them, and represented their only real output at the time other than some compilation tracks. They also had a Chequered Future Flexi which supposedly has Ray Cappo on vocals which I've never heard but I sure would like to (hint). If you missed B & W the first time out there was a compilation called Die Jerry Die that compiled 5 great 7"s from the area (including RFP) onto one disc but it had a very limited run, so it's hard to track down. It would probably still be a bargain compared to tracking down all of the 7"s. Reflex From Pain members would eventually play in 76% Uncertain who have a website which says CDs are coming soon so hopefully Estimated Monkey Time will finally be available again. Code Of Honor were a California band that released a full length, one 7", and a split LP with Sick Pleasure (a band that shared members with C.O.H.). All of their releases are solid and the Beware the Savage Jaw LP is one of my all time favorite punk records. It contains a lot of diversity musically, and in my opinion it works. I have no info on what these guys are up to nowadays and no info on whether or not any of this is in print. All releases were on Subterranean but their website never seems to be updated (?). A complete discography CD would be sweet, and would probably fit on one disc.

The Young and the Useless 7" Real Men Don't Floss (their only record I know of) is a good example of the kind of record that you probably couldn't give away when it came out in 1982 that collectors will now pay $150 for. Is it the scarcity of the pressing? The fact that it contains a future Beastie Boy? The desire to own a complete set of early NYHC? For me, I think its a great example of what early hardcore was based on- the egalitarian notion that a bunch of kids can get together and make the music they want DIY style-

Gauze is/was a great Japanese hardcore band that as far as I can tell may have had as many as 4 LPs, a couple of 7"s, and tracks on a few compilations. These songs are from their 2nd LP, 1986's Equalizing Distort. Any information would be appreciated, particularly whether or not their material is being repressed- everything I can track down is in Japanese.

I was looking at upcoming shows the other day and saw The Vandals. I must be totally out of the loop because I didn't know they were still playing, but it reminded me of a story. I was working at a convenience store in the middle of nowhere suburban Austin, Texas @1992 and this guy comes in. He said something about the (punk) shirt I was wearing and said he used to be in a band in L.A., but commented that I probably had never heard of them. I asked which one and he replied that he used to sing for The Vandals. I responded with a holy shit, are you Stevo? He said he went by Stephen now, that he had been saved, and that he was in town for some sort of Christian event that his band was playing at. We chatted a little about Circle One and he seemed like a real nice fella. So my question is, does anyone know what band he was in at that time or has anyone ever heard 'em? Regardless, here's Stevo at his raging best and you can still get Peace Thru Vandalism/When In Rome from Time Bomb Records.

Oh what's a liberal minded punk type to do when confronted with a band like Skrewdriver? In the late 70s they put out 3 great singles and an equally rocking LP, All Skrewed Up. And then came the revamped Skrewdriver. I for one can put the politics aside and enjoy some of the later material, as I can with almost any music I don't agree with, but after 1982 Skrewdriver would never be the same. If you don't know what I'm talking about you can look them up yourselves, I'm not going to waste a bunch of space talking about it. Here's the earlier Skrewdriver on their 1977 single.

Rhythm Pigs

Rhythm Pigs were (are?) a great band from El Paso, Texas. They put out 2 fantastic LPs in the 80s, The Rhythm Pigs and Choke On This (FLEX discography gives both of them a 10), which C/Z Records has collected on one CD. They were one of those bands that could really play and integrated a lot of musical styles into their songs, yet still maintained a punk edge. They also released a 3rd LP in 1993 which I haven't heard and a 7" as late as 1997. Not included on the CD is their first 7", 1984's An American Activity. Although I think the LPs blow this away, 21 years later it still rocks and shows the sound they would perfect on the full lengths. So here it is.

Everyone probably already knows everything about Fear, so instead of the regular material I'm posting their songs from their Saturday Night Live appearance. If you don't know the story here's what i've always heard: SNL wanted John Belushi to come back for a guest spot and he agreed as long as Fear was the musical act. Fear brought along some "dancers" including a bunch of folks from the D.C. scene and they proceeded to go nuts until someone yelled "Fuck New York" or something to that effect and they cut to commercial as Fear starts Let's Start A War. That's Donald Pleasance introducing them (fittingly) for the Halloween episode. Crappy sound but it's a great piece of punk rock history you always hear stories about, or you could just see for yourself....

If you were like me you heard the Japanese band GISM on the P.E.A.C.E. compilation and thought to yourself, "what the hell is this?". I couldn't explain why I liked it, it just seemed weird and different and had that gloom metal edge. The fact that little info about the band seemed to exist made them all the more intriguing. As far as I can tell they produced 3 LPs and had some compilation tracks, followed by a bunch of bootlegs of the LPs. I prefer their first 12", Detestation, while some of the more hardcore fans seem to favor M.A.N. which leans more to the metal side. Here's some tracks from Detestation.

This isn't really music, just an odd record. It was released by Alamut Records as a 2x7" with each of the 4 sides consisting of an interview with a serial killer over a weird electronic drone. I think it was done as a benefit for victim's families but it's just downright creepy. Highlights include Ted Bundy blaming his murders on porn and violent television while being interviewed by James Dobson of Focus on the Family the night before his execution. Other than that I don't have much information since I uploaded it from a cassette, my vinyl copy disappeared long ago.

These midwestern (Dayton, Ohio) guys released a couple of great LPs and some not so great ones. Their first, Independence, is a crowd pleaser and has been reissued by Beer City Records while Kill By Remote Control, their 2nd full length and my favorite, is still out of print (isn't it?). Their later records never really caught my attention but they may catch yours. They also have some good early 7"s but they mostly fall into the high dollar collectible category. 1984's God Bless America 7" is a fine example of their tight and melodic hardcore.

Mule (from Detroit, not the Portland band) released 2 LPs, an EP, and 2 7"s of dirty, trashy blues. Not so much a punk band as a band with punk roots, they consisted of P.W. Long from Wig and 1/2 of The Laughing Hyenas (John Brannon's post-Negative Approach project). All of their stuff is readily available through Touch and Go and Quarterstick with the exception of the 7" on Nocturnal Records. It contains Tennessee Hustler (a loose reworking of, I believe, Jimmie Rodgers' Blue Yodel #9) and a nice thick b side.

Here's some Canadian thrash played by youngsters trying to fit way too many songs on to a 7". They produced 3 singles, 2 of which were rereleased on a CD that I think is out of print now. The 7's go for too much $$$ as is the case for most early 80's hardcore due to the limited pressings that broke ass punks could afford to make. Energetic, gnarly, and noisy. Nig-Heist

Nig-Heist was a filth spewing rock band fronted by Black Flag Roadie/Soundman Mugger and whoever was on tour with them at the time. They produced only one full length LP, Snort My Load, which gives you an idea of the lyrical content. Musically it sounds like Loose Nut era Black Flag- I think it rocks. Their album, single, unreleased tracks, and a live show was released on a 2xCD on Drag City which is now out of print (according to their website). It's claimed that Mugger went on to become a millionaire computer mogul.

Few bands have had more influence on the strength of a demo cassette and a couple of songs from a compilation, but these guys from Massachusetts seem to get name dropped a lot. The demo was later bootlegged as a 7" and the other music was featured on Pushead's awesome Cleanse The Bacteria LP. Their entire output (9 songs?) was collected on Drop Dead for Lost & Found and on a Relapse Records release. I'm unsure of the legality of these later comps but it doesn't matter since I'm pretty sure they are no longer available either. Here's a sampling of their brutal hardcore.

Taang! Reissues

It's always nice when someone takes the time to put long gone vinyl on a comprehensive CD so you don't have to pay dumb ass prices to hear it. I ripped these tracks from vinyl before realizing that Taang records has done this with two of my favorites, Nip Drivers and Battalion Of Saints. The Nip Drivers CD combines Destroy Whitey (where these tunes are from) and the equally good Oh Blessed Freak Show. Death R Us (the B.O.S. disc) includes Fighting Boys and the classic Second Coming LP + some extra goodies. Their metal tinged hardcore made for a great live show. I believe both bands periodically play out but I'm not sure how active they are overall.

No Trend were a D.C. area band that didn't have much in common with the sound of the Dischord scene, as one listen to Tritonian Nash-Vegas Polyester Complex (available on Touch And Go Records) will attest to. Their LP More was apparently too different for T & G's roster and wasn't released until recently by Morphius Archives. Their older singles are harder to come by but were collected on When Death Won't Solve Your Problem on Lydia Lunch's Widowspeak records, which is out of print. These songs are from that collection.

Drunks With Guns

This St. Louis band played some nice sludgy punk rock (when playing nice sludgy punk rock didn't go over all that well). During their first show opening for 45 Grave and the Vandals they mostly just traded insults with the audience and did a lot of spitting. That was enough to get me to buy the first 7", the only thing I've ever owned by them, which i hated the first time I heard. They have since become a bit of a cultish favorite with some folks, and this record sure has grown on me. Here's the first 7" on Cheap Beer Records-
