Disappointed Parents

After the last few posts I figured I'd go back to something in the hardcore vein. Here's what I believe to be the only recording of this New Orleans band, 1983's Am I Getting Through? released on Crispy Christ. I think its pretty generic but I'm going to throw it out there anyway. There's a brief article about the history of New Orleans rock and punk which mentions Disappointed Parents but other than that I don't know that much about them.

Having been involved with the New Orleans/Baton Rouge punk scene in the early 80's, I know about the Disappointed Parents all too well. Singer Ron went on the become a Krsna devotee. Otto, the bassist was hit by a car in the late 80's and it severely disabled him. I remember not being very fond of the band when they were together, I was more into the Sluts, Red Rockers (before they tried going legit...), Shell Shock, Toxin 3 and countless other great bands from the region. I really do appreciate this post. Not crazy about the recording but it brings back good memories. Blake

I have to agree with you there. I'd wanted to hear this 7" for a while and when I did I have to admit that they don't stack up against the other bands that you mention. Thanks for the info about the band.

I never saqw them, but they used to play alot with my friend Sean's band Surfin' Jesus(SJ broke up before they recorded) and used to see Ron and Otto around alot...one of Rollins' books reprints a fan-note otto sent him from the hospital; I also went to his release-from-the-hospital party at some rich girls' house around '85.
I think EJ,the gtrist, has a site up too.

Surfin' Jesus, I totally forgot about those guys. SS Injustice was around back then, too. Mike Williams (Eye Hate God) had a band back then as well, forget the name. I had forgotten the Guitarists name, after seeing EJ, I remember his name was Earl...

Always heard great things about the first Shell Shock 7" but I've never heard it. Seems as though the New Orleans scene is getting some good attention on the blogs lately.

the first shell shock 7" was great. "My Brain is Jelly" was a punk classic. Anybody got it to post?

Thanks for the Disappointed Parents. I remember listening to their single in Houston back in '87. "American Rebel" was the cut we all liked because it made us cut up when we listened to it, especially the part when the singer says "...can't you under-fucking-stand..?" Thanks.

Our band, the Spoiled Brats, hailed from the North Shore, but played in NOLA as often as we could find a slot (Capp's, Cafe Brasil, VFW's, K of C's, etc...) during summers of '85-'86. I have fond memories of playing with the likes of Shell Shock, Graveyard Rodeo, No More Fun (BR), and Fire to name a few. We never played with Disappointed Parents but we knew those guys from the scene. And what a scene it was. Remember Null and Void's shows in the early '80s?

I know a little about DP since I was the singer. Was surfing the net, looking up things on New Orleans and somehow this came up. It was a long time ago. Does Blake know about us "all too well"? Hi Greg, how r u?

GUIDE ME FORWARD, BRING ME NEAR,
HOW MUCH FURTHER IS TOO FAR?
EMOTIONLESS, LYING STILL,
UNABATED, CLOUDED EYES;
IN QUANTITIES, HEAPS OF TRASH,
CLUTTERING AND POLLUTING;
WAITING FORGETS, LOSING DEPTH,
STILL, I'VE GONE ON, I GO ON...

ALL IS SLIPPING THE SENSES,
SIGHT, SMELL, & TASTE BUT TO WHERE?
OVER EMPHASIS CONFUSES,
ALONE I AM, YET I'M NOT.
FOOLISH DREAMING'S WONDERMENT,
OF ANOTHER'S PANTED SHOW.
CRUSHING, KEEPING, HOLDING TIGHT,
KNOWING I'M SOUL, I GO ON...

WHEN INTERVALS ARE TIMELESS,
PAUSE EMBRACES STEADINESS.
PAST, PRESENT, THEN WHAT FUTURE?
PART UNBROKEN, ETERNAL;
EVER MOVING SOUL MOVEMENTS,
WHERE SPIRIT'S HEIGHTS ARE CALLING.
DESTINATIONS, ULTIMATE,
IN MY REACHING, I GO ON...

Man, I hope this thread is alive still...
Wow - Karen, Blake, Greggo, Dennis, Ron- Whats up ya'll!
Yeah, those truly were "The Days". Alotta shit has happened since those glory years but it seems the original core are still around for the most part. There is a book to be written about the NOLA scene and I'd love to talk to all of you guys about contributing and other contacts to seek out. So many great gigs and bands and stories etc... I'd like it to start around the Normals era up until now. Thats hell of alot of work, but it needs to be done. I've talked to Jessie Goldfinch about some ideas + photos/flyers and bunch of other folks want to get involved.
Hope you all are great and I hope any and all petty differences are set aside to document that (and this!) insanely killer Punk, Hardcore & Metal scene that our fair filthy city has produced!

Jon here, from No More Fun and Chaos Horde. Wow....what to say? Is that the same Art that my mom chased out of the house with a 38? Good times! Ron turned me on to this thread. I've been in Austin for the longest time, but I sure do remember Luis. Sorry to hear about that.

At 1:09 PM, Blogger Art said...

I don't remember having been chased by a 45-wielding mom, though it's certainly possible. And I was even straight-edge back then. Maybe that memory was in the brain cells I've lost since returning to the real world. So, what ever happened to FIRE? Remember the song "Red Dress?" I don't know that they ever released anything official, anyone else know? I may have a 1/4" reel-to-reel live recording of them from a show we booked in Slime-Hell. Next time I'm down at the folks' house I'll dig around for it.

Just thought I'd let it be known that I really don't appreciate our record and our music being labled "generic" as we don't feel that it was nor is. Tim Yohannan of Max RnR Mag. stated that "Am I Getting Through?" was a "minor classic" and whenever we played away from New Orleans, no one commented that our shows were "generic". It seems that it's being judged like that on a local basis. Even given that, we did not sound like the Sluts, we did not sound like any other band in Louisiana for that matter, and Earl's guitar solos couldn't even be played by most of the guitarists around the Louisiana scene. So how are we generic? Also it's not cool to dog us since we never dogged anyone else, but helped whomever we could back then, with an open mind and never called anyone "generic". There is no other hardcore band from Louisiana that has a song dubbed "a minor classic" amongst hardcore bands worldwide. Which band was it that you were in? Which hardcore band realeased what record with your hard work and effort?

BTW, DP is up and going again, set for a reunion gig in January. We are laying low and rehearsing with a new lineup mixed with some musicians that played in DP over those years back then and a guitarist that did not. It would be cool if old friends came out for it. It'll be promoted. Until then I can be contacted at ronojiva@yahoo.com.

(From a Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll record review by Tim Yohannan).... DISAPPOINTED PARENTS – "Am I Getting Through?" EP.... “The title song here is a minor classic, and it sets the pace for a very high-speed record. Most of it is pretty good, al...though the drummer can't quite seem to keep up with it all.”...
