Mutants

If I have this straight there's a Mutants from Detroit, one from California, and this one from Liverpool, right? And I'm sure there's probably a hundred more since it seems like a it would be a popular name. These Mutants released two singles, the more difficult to find Hard Times/School Teacher which I'd like to hear if anyone has it, and this one. 77 Punk, where the cover scan comes from, doesn't have much to say about them and this may be too rock sounding for some ears but I like it. Vocalist Sweet William has a nice Lee Ving thing going on especially on Boss Man. Oddly, the version of this 7" that seems to float around the most is the original even though I think this single was reissued and bootlegged at one point.

Their other single is way better in my opinion. More punk but with the same rock feel.

"Piece of Shit" from the Detroit one isn't that bad. It is silly lyrics but cool music. Both of their singles are decent. Nothing mind blowing but I wouldn't say they suck.

I agree, Strange Reaction posted it some time ago and I found it to be quite catchy.

Strangely the vocals remind me of Katon of Hirax.

The Mutants (San Francisco) will be playing at the Fillmore with Flipper and the Dead Kennedys. April 8. Definitely the Mutants to see.

I couldn't help but hear shades of "The Who" in their music and singing. Also, I'll throw my two cents in that the other Mutants' "Piece of Shxx" single is excellent (not quite punk and, yes, juvenile in lyrical content, but very catchy all the same).

Actually, the one from Detroit is superior. Evidently the person who claimed to not like them never saw them perform. (I did). The CA band is terrible. There's also Los Mutants or whatever.

The MI Mutants intended to be ironic. One of the band members wrote for CREEM magazine, certainly a very cool tie-in. "So American" was nearly a hit here, and anybody who doesn't understand the sarcasm in their lyrics must be a bit thick, as those in the UK say.
