Suburban Mutilation

I first heard Suburban Mutilation on my local no power having college radio station @1985. I rarely ordered records through the mail so it took a while to track down a copy at my local store and unfortunately I misplaced it about a year later. Fast forward around 20 years and I finally get to hear this gem again. I thought for sure nostalgia got the best of me and it would end up sounding disappointing to jaded ears. I guess I was wrong because I still think this LP rocks in all of its fuzzed out noisy glory. This record also contains some of the worst guitar leads/solos on a punk record I've heard but somehow they fit perfectly. S.U.M. member Rev Norb went on to other more well known bands that I know nothing about, but maybe you do. Here's some of my favorite tracks......
Ya Buncha Morons
Plastic Chicken
Police State
No Explanations
El Salvador Stomp

Rev Norb was in (or is still in? I've lost track of them) Boris the Sprinkler. They're ok, a little boring.

I read what I think is a recent interview this morning and he claimed Boris The Sprinkler were "dead and buried". He seems to be covering full LPs and Bob Dylan songs???

I was always curious if Norb had a blog, etc. I enjoyed his writing but I haven't picked up a zine in years. As for BTS, well I was always disappointed with what I heard. This SM material on the other hand is pretty good.

I'll see about posting the entire record. This copy is from a bootleg CD and I can't seem to import the Intro which is awesome so I'm going to record from cd to final vinyl in order to capture it. Sometimes I feel odd about posting an entire LP because they seem more ripe for a reissue. When a band just has a 7" I figure they are long gone and if it is reissued it will contain other material making its purchase worth it even if you have the 7". Anyone else have an opinion on this? I was never much of a fanzine reader, I know Norb did Sick Teen but I don't know anything about it.

Hey malfeitor, good question on submitting the whole record or not. My admittedly selfish take stems just from wanting to hear as much good old hard to find stuff as I can. I do understand not wanting to essentially "reissue" something by putting it on the blog for all to hear/download for free.

Especially in a case like this where we know one of the band members is still active in some respect and has the definite tools at hand to reissue this if he wanted.

Wow, I don't think I shed any light on the matter. That being said, great post.

Yeah, great choice.

Don't know what happened to the rest of the band. As others pointed out, Norb ended up fronting the pop punk band, Boris the Sprinkler. They even covered SUM's "I Object" on one album.

Lately, Norb's been contributing to "Razorcake" and did the all Dylan cover album (released by Alternative Tentacles).

He also chronicles his dreams on his myspace blog!

Norb also fronted the great DEPO PROVERA (though their recorded output is slim, a 7" and some comp trax) betwix SUM and BORIS.
I thought Boris were great fun, especially live they reminded me a lot of The Toy Dolls.
Someone unearthed (or unatticed) a bunch of the SUM lp's in the mid to late 90's as they were all over the midwest for cheap for a while.
SICK TEEN was his zine from the early 80's (last issue in 87 or so) that was pretty awesome.

sick teen was a sick explosion of tiny tiny copier-reduced type and hellishly clever press on lettering and scribbles and cut n pastes. it was one of my role models. i still have the sick teen tshirt that caused a ruckus with an irate and relatively unironic flipside reader.

Superclassy, you're correct since Norb is kind of active in the "scene" as it were that that would make a difference on what I would post- otherwise I suppose I wouldn't care. The absurdity of $$$ that some people want for the record on the other hand means if anyone wants the whole record I'm happy to put it in a private folder and let you download it from there. Just shoot me an email.

This lp is out on soulseek. Quality's a little rough but so is the original. Great stuff.

I need to get with this soulseek thing. I've never looked into it. Can you pretty much get anything you're looking for? If so maybe this blog is obsolete, although I imagine a lot of people are like me, in that I do this blog and look at others to jog my memory on bands I've totally forgotten about. Yea, I guess I'm too lazy right now to mess with file sharing....

.....by the way, how does the quality of the soulseek SUM compare with the ones I posted?

I have no idea wt make it is, but its kinda new. Its a windows vista, Toshiba, and thts all i know. But when i go on random websites it takes quit awhile to load up the page, and when im playing games, its very laggy, like when i click something it takes awhile to react. And the worst part, is my old laptop when i loaded the laptop, it would take about 30 secs to get to home page, now this laptop takes around 5 minuets?? Why??
