Skrewdriver

Oh what's a liberal minded punk type to do when confronted with a band like Skrewdriver? In the late 70s they put out 3 great singles and an equally rocking LP, All Skrewed Up. And then came the revamped Skrewdriver. I for one can put the politics aside and enjoy some of the later material, as I can with almost any music I don't agree with, but after 1982 Skrewdriver would never be the same. If you don't know what I'm talking about you can look them up yourselves, I'm not going to waste a bunch of space talking about it. Here's the earlier Skrewdriver on their 1977 single.

tracks removed to free up space.

Nice site by the way.

Even though you're right this is before Skrewdriver became overt nazis - and the rest of the old band hated what the band became - I still don't buy the "it's just music" argument for their later releases.

Maybe it seems fairly abstract if you're from the US but growing up in the UK you had no choice but to fight against the extreme right - the threat of violence was real. And the people in/ around Skrewdriver didn't just play mediocre bonehead music with dumb lyrics they were also involved in organising violence not just against people they deemed racially impure but all those race traitors on the 'left', punks, gays, etc.

I for one am glad Ian Stuart Donaldson is dead.

Fuck 'em.

I can see your point. For me, music can have value even if its lyrical content or intended purpose is repugnant. I have a problem with their more overtly racist material but the nationalist stuff (e.g. Voice of Britain, Smash the IRA) is more tolerable. It's a weak comparison but I can listen to Skrewdriver the same way I can listen to Spirituals or Gospel even though I find Christianity absolutely ridiculous. Now- actually paying for a Skrewdriver record? That's a whole different story.

hmm...i don't think i can take these twats seriously..having been around in the rock against racism days i still tend to have bad vibes about this kind of group. I remember an equally twattish outfit known as the 4skins and they were shite too. Good blog by the way!!!

Fuck all you pc pussies skredriver's greatest asset is the overtly racist pure hate lyrics if you got a problem don't liten to it!

Ms. NaziGirl's brilliant commentary reminds me why I don't listen to Skrewdriver - any era. I admit that the early stuff rocks. I like it. But promoting the early stuff promotes the later stuff. Which is promoting violence and intolerance.

Your gospel analogy is a little weak dude. I don't know of any gospel artists who promoted racial violence and murder.

Excellent blog though.

I was simply stating that I can tolerate lyrical content that offends some people. Obviously I wouldn't compare the promotion of Christianity to the promotion of racial intolerance. They are both (in my opinion) retarded, but certainly not equally retarded and not in the same way. I really don't see how promoting Skrewdriver's early stuff and making the distinction between that material and the later stuff "promotes" their subsequent racist releases. I'm giving the original band (who don't agree, as far as I know) with Stuart's later views credit for putting out some great music and assuming the general public can make their own minds up. The Strange Reaction blog posted the Sluts 12" even though they had recorded the song "poor blacks", but he made the decision not to the post that particular song. Does this mean he shouldn't have posted any of their record?
In addition, I left Nazi girl's comment to the post intact because its relevant to the post and it demonstrates better than I can what an asinine viewpoint these types of people have. They are their own worst enemy when they attempt to promote their nonsense.

This version of 19th Nervous Breakdown is pretty crap anyway. Check out Tuxedo Moon's interpretation on Live at the Deaf Club. From their punkier time this is far more abrasive.

well i think you are all retarded, except nazigirl, she has her head on straight. Ian Stuart is the greatest White man that ever lived. Skrewdriver is the greatest band of all time and many people i know will agree with me on that. why do we need people like gays and thieving gangster 'blacks' and mind corrupting zionists anyways? you tell me.

Were the 4-skins racist also?? I thought they weren't

OK folks I believe in an open forum, but threatening other people reduces the discussion to a pretty ignorant level and I have to draw the line somewhere so some of the posts have been removed. As far as 4 skins go I always thought they were ruffians but not really a racist band- but I don't really know.

I'm pretty sure the 4 Skins weren't racist, at least there's nothing racist in their lyrics and members of the band have denied being racist in recent years. Their violent image earnt them some National Front followers, much the same as many of the early 80s Oi bands in the UK, but most of those bands didn't want their support but didn't know how to deal with it.

it's just music, don't take it to heart,.. i know it's easy to try and take some lyrics the wrong way.. -all they were saying is think for yourself - and belive in it..- if you don't think period,--- thats the real problem.

skrewdriver had some of the most insightful lyrics of any band i have encountered. hell,i would bet that none of you complainers have a problem with all of the non white bands that bash the white race, well skrew you I for one believe that supporting my people in a time of conflict is natural honorable and required of any morally decent person.if you are against your own people be they black white or what have you you can do nothing but lose because your battle is against yourself.dont let your tv tell you how to think.blood&honour88

No the band didn't "hate" what they became, they believed in what they believed in and they still have pride in it. Ignorance, yes. And so are you who follow the neo-nazi, nazi skinhead, or far right bonehead theory. It's stupid and it's sad that them even being how old they are now and (IF Ian Stuart Donaldson were still alive), would still be as ignorant as they were back then, because they didn't think there music was bad at all. When they first started out they weren’t racist and had nothing racist to say, they were punks. They then later got into the hole skin act saying they had grew up with the skin concept. They didn't make gigs so they went back to the fashion of punk, which isn't punk because punk isn't about fashion at all. Which is ridiculous because if they felt so strongly of skin they wouldn't have gave a shit if they lost a couple gigs. Its hypocritical and stupid. And
nazi girl , your a dumbass, I’m not a pc punk , and I don’t listen to skewdriver, and wouldn't..

maybe you kids should think for yourself it could get you somewhere.
cheers

Skrewdrivel sucks. No way around it, and any other RAC band to follow in their footsteps. They left a bad mark on Oi! and skinheads. The music sucks and so does the lyrics. The first time I heard them chant "Skinhead Skinhead" I couldn't stop laughing. They have nothing insightful to say. Just ignorant, racist, and fascist. Why would anyone want to think that the greatest band ever had a singer who crashed his dumbass into a tree? I wouldn't. He's just a dumbass.

If anyone wants anything offensive just listen to Chaotic Dischord. It makes GG Allin look like Hanson.

I was late to the game when it came to Skrewdriver. I first encountered one of their records in 1987 or so and didn't buy the record because it was the label logo was a 'white power' one. A few weeks later, I came back to the record shop and the record was gone and never was stocked again, eventhough, this record shop had all kinds of so called 'questionable' releases in stock, including GG Allin stuff. This was in 1988. Years later, I did buy al old Skrewdriver record, White Rider as well as a previous release. Their lyrics are Euro-centric. So, as an American, I could not and still don't relate much to the lyrical content, however, I do sense the sincerity in what they were communicating about political/social sentiments in Europe in general and the U.K. in particular. I fell in love with the music. I still hold my 2 records in high esteem and have 2 Skrewdriver t-shirts that I wear. I come from a Hispanic background, but have been a punk since 1983. As it was in the beginning as now, it's the music that moves me, a soundtrack against the useless AOR money grubbing music, and punk is still underground even today. The mainstream punk is just as bad today when fashion is still posing. Skrewdriver's music is still cool after all these years. The music holds up, I listen and it doesn't offend me, just as M.D.C.'s first record doesn't offend. That's adulthood.
